Woody Houck, 83, B&H Concrete Construction founder remembered as a pioneer in the industry

Woody Houck, of Virginia Beach, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Nov. 14, 2015, after a brief battle with cancer. He was 83.

He and his loving wife, Melva, just celebrated 63 happy years of marriage. He will be missed by his treasured children, Val Gwaltney (Ron), Tim Houck (Cindy) and Laurie Pocock (Reid); his grandkids, Nathan and Cameron Gwaltney (Whitney) and Meghan Roberson (Blake); and great-grandbabies, Brantley, Morgan and Madison Houck and Hayley, Trey, Jack and Molly Pocock.

Each had a unique, close relationship with their adoring Papa who took a very active role in their lives. He and Melva held a weekly sleepover called “Cousins’ Night” for the grandkids for over 30 years and left a great legacy of love for their family. He leaves behind his beloved siblings, Alice Carr and Jack Houck. He will also be fondly remembered by his tight-knit extended family.

Woody was a true pioneer in the concrete industry, founding B&H Concrete Construction Corp in 1969, quickly building it into one of the most respected construction companies in the region. His three children still live in Virginia Beach and work in the 47-year-old family business.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2015, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel. A celebration of life service will be conducted by his nephew the Rev. Brian Carr at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 19, 2015, at Community United Methodist, his church for over 50 years where he sang in the choir. The burial will be at the private family cemetery where he was born and raised in what is now Twin Falls State Park, West Virginia.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Virginia Beach Young Life or Community United Methodist.

Please leave online condolences for the family at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home.
