Hughes Jennings Rhodes III, 65, known as a happy, cheerful guy who was gifted with his hands

Hughes Jennings Rhodes III, of Virginia Beach, died at home on Nov. 8, 2015, at the age of 65.

He was born in Red Springs, North Carolina, and grew up in Raeford, North Carolina, and Clarksville, moving to Virginia Beach after graduating from Elon University with a degree in mathematics. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hughes “Dusty” and Helen Rhodes.

Hughes spent most of his career working in the Garment District in New York City, selling and designing ladies sportswear, commuting back to Virginia Beach on the weekends to be with his family. He loved his annual trip to the mountains with friends. He was an avid swimmer and loved to run on the boardwalk. Always known to be a happy and cheerful guy. He was a gifted man with his hands and could build or fix just about anything.

He is survived by his wife, Sally Venner Rhodes; children, Rob and Liz Rhodes; sister, Ellen R. Covington and her husband Don; brother, Richard Rhodes; sister, Jane R. Spoon; and brothers- and sisters-in-law Mary Ann and Herm Schmidt, Mandy and Mike Yoder, Bob and Lisa Venner, Bill Venner, John and Melisa Venner and Jim and Kim Venner and all their children and grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2015, at Nimmo United Methodist Church.
