John E. Dohner, 85, US Navy lieutenant who ‘loved his golf’

John E. Dohner, of Virginia Beach, died, Oct. 20, 2015, at the age of 85.

Mr. Dohner was born Oct. 6, 1930, in Alexandria, the son of the late Bessie Ellis and John B. Dohner. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Sara Amelia Dohner-Harrison.

Mr. Dohner was a graduate of the University of Virginia and was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy. After his service he went to work for C&P and retired from Bell Atlantic in 1992 as division plant manager. An avid sportsman, John played basketball, baseball and tennis in college and loved his golf.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Aimee Carlin Dohner; brother, Larry Dohner and his wife, Lynn; daughter, Perine Pierce and her husband, Mike, of Virginia Beach; son, John E. Dohner Jr., of Fairhope, Alabama; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three nieces; and one nephew.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, 2015, at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015, at the funeral home. Entombment will follow at Princess Anne Memorial Park.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
