William ‘Buddy’ Jefferson Queen, 81, served 12 years in Navy, 20 years in civil service

William “Buddy” Jefferson Queen, of Virginia Beach, died Monday, Oct. 12, 2015, surrounded by his family. He was 81.

He was born in Pikeville, Kentucky, son of the late Tina Blackburn and Noah Queen. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Melody Broaddus.

Mr. Queen retired from the U.S. Navy after 21 years of service and continued on to work in civil service for over 20 years. Buddy loved spending time outdoors and especially working in his garden. He was a devoted husband, loving father, caring grandfather and great-grandfather and a loyal friend. Buddy will be missed by all who knew him.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 61 years, Shirley Queen; son, Kenneth Barry Queen (Jeralyn); daughter, Carolyn Dawn Berg (Kevin); grandchildren, Justin Ryan, Mark Ryan, Scott Queen, Jonathan Queen, Denise Canterbury (TJ) and Rebecca Campbell; great-grandchildren, Grace, Aurora, Tony, Hunter and Allister Canterbury; brothers, Donnie Queen and Jimmy Queen; and sisters, Connie Fortney and Lorraine Akers.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, 2015, at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach. A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2015, at the funeral home burial at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veteran’s Cemetery to follow.
