Gloria Whitman Cowan, 91, First Presbyterian Church member

Gloria Whitman Cowan died in her home in Virginia Beach on Oct. 10, 2015, at the age of 91.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Hawley Cowan, and her brother, George Bergen Whitman.

She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Rebecca and Thomas Hoye, of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Susan and Michael Uremovich, of Virginia Beach; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Cowan was a graduate of Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, where she majored in business and was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority. During her years in Coatesville, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Cowan worked with her husband, founder of Brandywine Veterinary Hospital.

She was active in community affairs in Coatesville, Brandywine Veterinary Hospital and later in Santa Fe, New Mexico, before moving to the Atlantic Shores Retirement Community in Virginia Beach. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Virginia Beach.

The family would like to express profound appreciation to the staff members of Medi Hospice and Atlantic Shores’ Assistance In Living Program for their extremely kind care and support.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015, at Atlantic Shores Retirement Community, Anchor Room.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Atlantic Shores Employees Gift Fund, 2000 Alliance Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23454.
