Donald ‘Don’ Milton Cheek, 80, saltwater fisherman remembered for his vivid storytelling

Donald “Don” Milton Cheek, of Virginia Beach, died peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Oct. 4, 2015, at the age of 80.

He was born in Weaverville, North Carolina and was the son of the late Liston and Majorie Cheek.

He is survived by his wife, Jane; children, Allen Cheek and Janice Grenier; four grandkids; brother, Vance Cheek; and several nieces and nephews.

Don was a veteran in the U.S. Army and retired from the automotive business. He was a member of Great Neck Baptist Church, including the Mark Stone Men’s Bible Class. Don always enjoyed spending time with his Hardee’s breakfast group, watching NASCAR races and saltwater fishing. He had a passion for listening to southern gospel music.

Don will be remembered for his love of family, sense of humor and his vivid storytelling. His greatest achievement was his role as father and grandfather. Don had a vibrant spirit that manifested into practical jokes and a permanent smile on his face. His love of life and devotion is instilled into his family and will never be forgotten.

A visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2015, at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., 2002 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, 2015, at Great Neck Baptist Church, 1020 General Jackson Drive, officiated by Dr. K. Todd Holt and the Rev. Bill Kincaid. A reception will follow at the church social hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Great Neck Baptist Church Building Fund.
