Elworth “Whitey” Whitehurst, 84 passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family, Saturday, October 3, 2015, to be with his Lord.
Whitey was born on Knotts Island, North Carolina and was the son of the late Tillett and Doris Waterfield Whitehurst. He graduated from Oceana High School and went to the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard and Reserves and retired from Colonial Stores and Farm Fresh. He also retired from the Virginia Beach City School Bus Assoc., where he worked with special needs children. He was a longtime member of London Bridge Baptist Church, where he loved John Stone Bible classes. He was a member of American Legion 113 and PAC/V.B.H.S. He always enjoyed fishing and the wonderful trips he had taken with dear friends.
He is survived by his special friend and caregiver, Vivian M. Whitehurst; his son, Anthony Whitehurst (Carol); his stepchildren, Patricia Croom, Michael Palmer; his granddaughters, Megan Whitehurst (Kenny Moore), Heather Croom Chaffin (Danny); step-grandchildren April Varela, Billy Varela; and his great-grandchildren, Emma Whitehurst, Joshua Vartanyan, Carter Varela and Luke Allan Chaffin.
The family would like to thank the wonderful people who kept in touch with Whitey and will always remember the ones who cared for him. And a big thank you especially to the Freda H. Gordon Hospice and Palliative Care of Tidewater.
The family will receive friends starting at 4 p.m. Wednesday, October 7, 2015 in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel with a funeral service to begin at 5 p.m., with the Reverend Tommy Taylor and Reverend Jim Thompson officiating. In lieu of flowers donations to the Virginia Beach Volunteer Fire Dept. or charity of choice.
