NORFOLK — After closing for eight months of extensive renovations, the portion of the Elizabeth River Trail that runs in front of the USS Wisconsin has reopened to the public.

The pedestrian boardwalk is part of the 10.5 miles of trail that runs between Harbor Park Stadium and Norfolk International Terminals.

While that portion of the trail is a manmade wooden boardwalk, many parts of the Elizabeth River Trail are off-road.

Residents can now walk under the shadow of the USS Wisconsin as they make their way through downtown Norfolk, officials said.

Pedestrians and bicyclists are welcome to ride along the Elizabeth River Trail and there are several events centered at getting people on the trails and out into the city.
