VIRGINIA BEACH — For those looking for eclectic fashion and art Carla Jernigan’s boutique, Gypsy Soul, is open for customers.

Sitting in the ViBe District off Mediterranean Avenue, Jernigan’s shop is a collection of clothing, art, jewelry and decor from all over the world.

“I look high and low for merchandise,” Jernigan said, noting she goes as far as Arizona for the Tucson Gem and Jewelry Show.

“I love a global influence,” she added, adding her merchandise is collected from vendors selling everything from handcrafted leather to hand-dyed fabrics to rugs from the Middle East.

Jernigan started out in the retail business a few years ago and when the opportunity came up for her to start her own shop, she jumped on it.

She was selling her merchandise at pop-ups and farmers markets before landing in her first physical space in the ViBe District, she said.

“I have a knack for looking at someone and being able to style them,” she said, adding she loved helping people find pieces that looked great on them.

She’s been open for about a month now and business has been great so far.

In addition to searching for merchandise, Jernigan works with three local artists to create some of her products.

Kim Cummings, of The Phoenix Gallery, painted the furniture pieces customers see for sale in the shop.

Tammy Dunn of Rae Dunn Jewelry and Kelly Conedera of XO Gallery both made jewelry with design instructions from Jernigan.

“I’m looking for the unique,” Jernigan said. “Fashion is timeless and I like catering to fellow gypsy souls.”

People were excited for a clothing boutique when she opened, the community has been very welcoming so far and she believes that what she sells is perfect for the beach community.
