VIRGINIA BEACH — Some 100,000 people will visit the Oceanfront to celebrate Independence Day and traffic will be heavy.

Officials said you should take note if you’re planning on heading to the annual Stars and Stripes Explosion event at the beach, “I-264 eastbound traffic may be diverted at Parks Avenue and redirected westbound on I-264 beginning at 8 p.m. on Thursday until 1 a.m. on Friday, or until traffic is flowing safely.”

During that time, the eastbound exit for South Birdneck Road and the westbound exit for First colonial Road may be closed, but other routes to the Oceanfront including General Booth Boulevard, Virginia Beach Boulevard, Laskin Road, and Shore Drive will stay open, officials said.

Mount Trashmore will have its annual fireworks display beginning at 9:30 pm and officials said traffic near Independence Boulevard, Edwin Drive, and South Boulevard will also be heavy.

Officials recommended event goers download the WAZE app for “real-time traffic updates,” and also visit the city’s “Know Before You Go” page for tips on trolleys, parking and more.
