Mourners gather at the memorials to pay respects and spread love

VIRGINIA BEACH — The memorials in front of Building 11 and Building 2 seem to have grown overnight as mourners flock to the sites with flowers, mementos and lots of love.

The community has rushed to embrace city workers after the tragic shooting Friday that claimed the lives of 12 people.

Among the dead from that carnage were four other engineers who worked to maintain streets and protect wetlands and three right-of-way agents who reviewed property lines. Others included an account clerk, a technician, an administrative assistant and a special projects coordinator. In all, they had served the city of Virginia Beach for more than 150 years.

On site Monday were several therapy dogs and prayer team members from Trinity Church who were handing out water bottles, blue ribbons and Bibles.

Since the memorial was put up on Saturday morning, 12 crosses have been added to the two platforms in front of Building 11.

Each of the crosses has a picture of the victims, some mementos from mourners and there are sharpies for people to write notes on the crosses.
