VIRGINIA BEACH — This city made the cut on the top 20 places in the country to spend Valentine’s Day.

It came in at No. 17, according to a study by WalletHub.

It’s not just popularity that makes Virginia Beach a good place to celebrate with a loved one, though, budgeting and cost play a role as well, according to the ranking.

According to WalletHub, in 2019 Americans collectively will spend $20.7 billion on Valentine’s Day gifts — from greeting cards to jewelry to a special night out — with the average person spending $161.96.

WalletHub set out to find what the best places were in the country for spending a frugal Valentine’s Day, they compared 100 of the largest U.S. cities across 25 key metrics, ranging from florists per capita to forecast precipitation to cost of a three-course meal for two.

Virginia Beach had a pretty high rank when it came to budgeting, coming in at number 4 of 100.

The city didn’t do as well in the other categories, coming in at 54 for activities, 42 for gift accessibility and 53 for weather forecast.

Virginia Beach landed in the middle of the road on those last three rankings.

Another fun fact about spending Valentine’s Day in Virginia Beach is that the city has the lowest average ticket price for Valentine’s Day parties.
