NORFOLK — Clever Communities in Action will be launching the second location of their Razor Sharp Readers program at Kinetic Kutz and Stylez at 702 East Little Creek Road here.

The expansion will kick off in honor of Black History Month and members of the community are invited to enjoy food, fellowship, prizes and free haircuts for children 12 and younger on Feb. 2 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Razor Sharp Readers is an “incentivized program” that meets children in a familiar setting: a barber shop.

The Razor Sharp Readers corner located inside the barbershop consists of a selection of books with African-American characters, history and culture for children to read as they wait for a haircut and in the barber chair aloud to their barber, according to a news release from CCIA.

“When I first walked into Kinetic Kutz and Stylez one of the barbers was reading a book while waiting for his client to arrive. I knew immediately this was the right atmosphere for our second location and the beginning of Black History Month is the perfect time to announce this new partnership to the community,” said Starr Armstrong, president & CEO of Clever Communities In Action.

In addition to the books, Razor Sharp Readers provide mentorship, prizes and positive affirmations in efforts to inspire children to read and build their self-esteem, according to CCIA.

“I wish we would have had Razor Sharp Readers in my hometown when I was a kid. I love the idea and am excited to implement it in my own shop,” said Kinetic Kutz owner Joe Cummings.

This event is free and open to the public.
