VIRGINIA BEACH – Small businesses are the heart and soul of the American economy, and likewise small businesses help keep this city afloat.

In recognition of its small businesses, the ViBe Creative District is inviting the public to take part in Small Business Saturday on Nov. 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Small Business Saturday is a national movement meant to encourage holiday shopping at local small businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

The local event was coordinated by 1701, a collaborative coworking space in the ViBe District.

“Small businesses, from artists to coffee roasters, are a vital part of the DNA in the ViBe Creative District. This is a neighborhood of people perusing their dreams and we invite the public to come learn why ‘shopping small’ matters to our local economy,” said Kate Pittman, executive director of the ViBe nonprofit.

More than a dozen stores and shops in the ViBe District will show off their wares while offering sales and specials that day. Some 23 additional small businesses will take part in a “pop-up” market that will be located in the ViBe Park (18th and Cypress).

That Small Business Saturday pop-up was originally located in 1701, said co-owner Lisa DeNoia.

“With the help of the ViBe Creative District, we are excited to see our event grow up and out of 1701 into ViBe Park, just as many of our start-ups have graduated out of our space into their own commercial real estate over the last few years,” she said.

Visitors to the event are encouraged to start their day at the pop-up market where they can collect a ViBe District scavenger hunt form, Pittman said.

After visiting several businesses throughout the neighborhood, visitors can return the form and will be entered into a grand prize drawing worth more than $500 in merchandise.

Free parking for the public will be along 18th Street, in the city lot beside the private lot of Wareing’s Gym. There are limited free public parking street spaces also located on Baltic Avenue.

The majority of private businesses provide free on-site parking as well.
