A portion of Kempsville Road will be closed to drivers this weekend while steel girders are installed as part of the I-64/I-264 interchange improvements project, according to a VDOT press release.
Beginning at 9 p.m. Friday, a detour will be in place for southbound traffic to turn left on Center Drive and right on Newtown Road in order to get back to Kempsville Road. The detour could be in effect until as late as 5 a.m. Monday.
The weekend of Feb. 23-26 will see the same closure. A closure from March 2-5 is possible, VDOT said.
Kempsville Road’s northbound traffic will also be stopped for as many as 20 minutes at a time during the closures. Outside of those stoppages, one northbound lane will remain open.
VDOT says that access to nearby churches — First Baptist Norfolk and Calvary Presbyterian — will remain open.
The sidewalk to the east of the northbound lanes will stay open, except for during the 20-minute traffic stoppages.
