VIRGINIA BEACH — More than 1,000 supporters are expected at Neptune Park this weekend to help fund type 1 diabetes research.

JDRF’s One Walk in Virginia Beach begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday. JDRF is shooting to raise more than $246,000 for this year’s walk. The organization says the large group of supporters will include teams representing area businesses, families, school and other groups.

“Everyone who comes out to walk or support the event will bring us one step closer to turning type 1 into ‘type none,'” JDRF One Walk volunteer Alex Nickols said in a press release.

The walk will feature music from DJ 401k, Bobby the Clown and snacks from Wawa and Coca-Cola. Check-in for the two-mile walk begins at 1 p.m.

The money raised allows for research on how to prevent, treat and ultimately cure type 1 diabetes, JDRF says. Thus far, the research has led to life-changing drugs, treatments and devices, according to a press release.
