Elderly woman dies after being mauled by dog in her home

VIRGINIA BEACH — An elderly woman has died after being mauled by a dog, according to police.

Around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, police were called to the Pembroke Manor neighborhood for a report of an animal attack. Responding officers found a woman in her 90s suffering from bites and lacerations.

The woman, whose identity will not be released out of respect for the family’s wishes, was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police said she died Thursday morning.

Police said that the dog is a 50-pound, 1-year-old American Pitbull Terrier and was a family-owned pet. They believe the dog attacked the woman after she fell inside her home.

The dog has been placed in quarantine at a local animal shelter.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
