A Norfolk craft beer brewery is expanding to the Oceanfront.
Smartmouth Brewing Company leased a 1958-era former U.S. Post Office at 313 32nd Street and plans to open its doors for business this summer.
The 9,457-square-foot brick and mortar will be converted to a brewery, event space and tasting room. It could brew 600 to 800 barrels of craft beer a year with a focus on experimentation and creativity, according to a City of Virginia Beach news release.

“Our employees and customers include residents from all over the 757 and this new location is intended to solidify our commitment to the region,” Smartmouth President Porter Hardy IV said in the news release. “On a personal level, I grew up just a few blocks away and can remember going to the post office as a kid so it is kind of surreal and just really exciting.”
The Virginia Beach Development Authority gave the brewery a $20,000 economic development investment program grant for its investment in the project. The Work Program Architects of Norfolk will oversee the brewery’s design, according to the news release.
“The craft beer community continues to grow in Virginia Beach, creating a lot of excitement for both locals and visitors,” Michelle Chapleau, business development coordinator said. “This announcement, the opening of Green Flash Brewing Co. last month and the success of several other breweries add to the vibrancy of the city.”
