Two dogs dead, woman injured in Virginia Beach SUV crash

Two small dogs are dead and a woman was injured after an SUV hit them Friday morning, police say.

A woman was walking her dogs across Rosemont Road around 7 a.m. when a driver hit them in the crosswalk at Buckner Boulvard, said Virginia Beach Police Department Master Police Officer Tonya Pierce.

The woman was crossing the road while the walk sign was active. The driver of the car was turning left from Buckner Boulevard onto Rosemont Road. The driver yielded for traffic, but hit them making the turn.

Both dogs died on the scene. The driver stopped to help the owner carry them back to her house until police arrived, Pierce said.

The dog owner was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries, and the driver was charged with reckless driving. Animal control came to the scene, and will hold the dead dogs for the owner.
