Newtown Road interchange construction slated to begin fall 2016

A $107.4 million construction contract for a project aimed to alleviate traffic at a congested Virginia Beach interchange was awarded to a New York-based company Wednesday.

The Tutor Perini Corp. of New Rochelle, N.Y. was awarded the contract by the Commonwealth Transportation Board. The construction, which is slated to begin this fall, will upgrade the ramp from Interstate 64 west to Interstate 264 east and Newtown Road, according to a Virginia Department of Transportation news release.

The project will:

  • Add a second exit lane from west I-64
  • Widen the ramp from I-64 west to I-264 east
  • Add a two-lane collector-distributor road from I-64 to the Newtown Road interchange
  • Add a two-lane flyover ramp for direct access to I-264 from I-64 west

The second phase of the project, which will likely be advertised for construction in early 2017, will facilitate improvements on Witchduck Road and create a new Greenwich Road overpass, according to the release.

The project is estimated to be complete by October 2019 and cost a total of $158 million. When it begins, the project will be the second to receive money from the Hampton Roads Transportation Fund, which is made up of regional sales and fuel taxes, the release states.
