Virginia Beach police officer accidentally shoots fellow officer in arm after firearms training

A Virginia Beach police officer accidentally shot another officer in the arm Wednesday after a firearms training session at a range in Moyock, N.C., according to police and a sheriff’s office.

One officer was cleaning his weapon when it fired, according to a release from the Camden County Sheriff’s Office, which investigated the shooting.

The injured officer was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, the sheriff’s office said.

The Virginia Beach Police Department also issued a release on the shooting. That summary said the injured officer is recovering at home. No officer has been placed on an administrative assignment because the shooting was considered to be an accidental discharge, the police department said.

“As this is an internal investigation the identities of involved officers are not being released,” it said.

The incident happened about 5:53 p.m. at a range at Academi in Moyock, N.C., according to the police department.

The Camden County Sheriff’s Office said in its release that no criminal charges are expected.

“Nothing further to report,” it said.

As for the Virginia Beach Police: “An internal investigation will be completed by the department, during which there will be a review of training and safety protocols,” its release said.
