VIRGINIA BEACH — With 315 part-time positions ready to be filled, hiring and training for the new Wegmans Food Market here will now switch into high gear.

Company officials on Thursday announced they will open the Virginia Beach location near the intersection of Virginia Beach and Independence boulevards on April 28.

Part-time job openings span a variety of positions across every department in the store, including customer service and culinary roles like chefs and line cooks, according to a news release from the grocery chain.

Hiring for 185 full-time jobs began in August and is ongoing for select remaining openings, such as cooks and sushi rollers.

The Virginia Beach store will employ 500 people, 450 of whom will be new to the company and hired locally. In addition to traditional groceries, the 113,000 square-foot store features an expansive variety of restaurant-quality prepared foods, including The Burger Bar, a family-friendly, casual restaurant counter that serves burgers, fresh salads, flavorful sandwiches, kids meals, soup, sides, and beer and wine by the glass.

“We seek friendly people who are passionate about food and ready to learn and grow. New employees begin training shortly after they’re brought on board so that they’re knowledgeable about our products and well prepared to offer incredible customer service,” said Mike Coyle,  Wegmans store manager, who joined the company as a management trainee in the produce department 25 years ago. “I couldn’t be more pleased with the quality of applicants we’ve seen here. We’re still hiring and already off to a fantastic start in Virginia Beach.”

Applicants are encouraged to apply online here, or call 757-271-0571 for more information. Applications are not accepted at the store construction site, nor are interviews conducted there.
