What’s ‘Sugar Skull?’ It’s a company and here’s what it does

Company aims to help clients cut through clutter and reach their audience

VIRGINIA BEACH — Like it or not, for better or for worse, the Internet has changed many things: from the way we entertain ourselves, to the way we get our news, and even the way we do business.

Earlier this year Sugar Skull Creative, a company specializing in video production, motion graphics, and editing, was born in Virginia Beach.

The company, which is co-owned by founders Alejandro Brubaker and Steve Strickland, will soon be moving to new digs in the city’s ViBe Creative District.

“There is such good energy and momentum in the ViBe District, which helps fuel passion for our projects and invites collaboration with other local artists,” Brubaker said. “It’s a growing community here and we’re excited to be a part of it.”

Brubaker said with the deluge of information that bombards Americans every day, Sugar Skull is a great resource for anyone – big company or small business – that has a message needing to be seen.

“Companies need to find a way to cut through the clutter and reach their audience. We aim to create a clear and compelling message for each client’s audience and do a presentation that truly represents each company’s values,” Brubaker said.

He said Sugar Skull can create a product that will get attention on any kind of screen, whether it’s television, computer, JumboTron, or a movie screen.

“Today it’s paramount for a company to have an online presence,” Brubaker said. “Years ago we would be delivering for broadcast about 50 percent of the time. These days it’s probably closer to 20 percent.”

The company has created branding and animations for start-ups and smaller businesses such as the Museum of Contemporary Art, as well as entities such as NBC Sports, the Washington Redskins, and even Capital One Arena.

He said Virginia Beach is a great location for their company.

“Not only is it a very attractive location, which is great for on-location video shoots, be we also don’t have to pay the high-priced leases and the hefty cost of living that some of the bigger studios do in New York City and Los Angeles.”

Their workspace includes a motion graphics area, traditional workstations with the latest software, and an editing suite that clients can come to for collaborative work.

“So, big time work in a personal, collaborative atmosphere,” Brubaker said.

Just recently Brubaker and the Sugar Skull team won three Telly Awards, which honor excellence in video and television across all screens. The team submitted three entries, receiving awards for each.

The Telly Awards received 12,000 entries from all 50 states and five continents in categories ranging from Online Commercials and Campaign Branding to Motion Graphics and 3D Animation.

The company’s name and logo not only provides a “cool aesthetic” Brubaker said, but it’s also a nod to his Mexican heritage and represents the day of the dead.
