John Skiptunas Sr., 81, left this life surrounded by his wife of 54 years and other family members Monday, April 17, 2017, after a hard-fought battle with cardiac issues. His humor, feisty personality and ability to connect with anyone he encountered will be sorely missed.

Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., he was the son of the late John and Adele Skiptunas.

He was a retired medical sales representative and a founding member of The Catholic Church of St. Mark, where he treasured and felt honored to serve as an Eucharistic minister. He faithfully prayed every morning for family, friends and parishioners.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Reed Skiptunas.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marlene Skiptunas of Virginia Beach, Va.; son, John P. Skiptunas Jr., and his wife, Trinika, of Lima, N.Y.; two daughters, Nadine M. Higgins, and her husband, Paul, of Delray Beach, Fla., and Paige E. Lamb-Madrigal, and her husband, Jeff, of Virginia Beach, Va.; seven grandchildren, Reed, Johnny Paul III, Brendan, Sutton, Julia, Emma and Cole; and sister, Marion Clark of New Jersey.

The family is deeply appreciative for his entire care team that helped him and his family through his journey; the nurses, physicians, surgeons, respiratory therapists and dear friends were tremendously helpful and supportive.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 20, at The Catholic Church of St. Mark. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated immediately following visitation at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary officiated by Father Charles Breindel.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests charitable donations be made to The Catholic Church of St. Mark or the American Heart Association.
