Donald J. McDowell, 84, of Virginia Beach, passed on Thursday, March 30, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. He was born to the late Robert W. Sr. and Anna Mc Dowell, in Brooklyn, N.Y.
At a young age, Donald moved to a farm in Upstate New York and then moved to Palenville, N.Y. Donald was stationed out of Norfolk and had resided in Virginia Beach for many years.
Donald graduated from Catskill High School in New York in 1950. In 1951, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Donald worked his way up the ranks from enlisted recruit to officer and retired a commander in 1981. He received many medals, citations and commendations. Donald served on multiple ships, but he loved serving on the USS Forrestal (CVA-59).
Donald obtained his MBA from Golden Gate University in California. He became a professor of accounting and finance and taught at St. Leo College, Navy Center. In 1996, Donald received his CPA, for which he was very proud. Donald was a very avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting and fishing. His favorite pastime was going to the casinos.
Donald was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert Jr. and Ronald. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 61 years, Kazuko; many nieces and nephews; and many friends and acquaintances.
Donald was a very accomplished man and a very social person with the ability to strike up a conversation with anyone. We will all miss his stories. Donald will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends.
