VIRGINIA BEACH — A man who doused a hamster in gasoline and lit it on fire last summer while another man recorded it on Snapchat was fined $250.

Anthony DiAngelo, 19, of the 800 block of 16th Street, was found guilty of misdemeanor animal cruelty Monday by Judge Paul Merullo.

The man who was suspected of recording the Snapchat video — 20-year-old Rayshawn Steverson of the 1500 block of Virginia Beach Boulevard — was originally charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty. The charge against Steverson was withdrawn because evidence didn’t prove that he helped DiAngelo burn the hamster, according to spokeswoman Macie Allen.

According to the release, a witness saw the Snapchat video and reported it to Virginia Beach Animal Control.
