Amity Winn Peirce Allen, 74, was born and raised in Lexington, Mass., and Scarborough, Maine. Amity died March 8, 2017, after an eight-year illness with Pick’s disease. Amity was a resident of Virginia Beach for over 30 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Grant Allen.

Amity is survived by her brother, Jonathan Peirce; sons, David Scott Allen and Jon Christopher Allen; daughter, Meredith Winn; and grandson, Finn Grigar.

A 1962 graduate of Westbrook College in Portland, Maine, Amity was among many things: an officer’s wife, a devoted mother, a loving Nana, and a dedicated teacher. Amity worked at W.T. Cooke and Linkhorn Park Elementary schools during her 30-year career as a special education teacher’s assistant.

She touched the lives of many and her positive outlook on life was a testament to her strength and grace. Amity was a member of Cape Henry Woman’s Club and active on several fundraising projects. She treasured her lifelong friendships, was an avid reader, enjoyed the beach and loved gardening. She was the light of every room and will be missed by all who knew her.

Her family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at The Memory Center for providing comfort and dignity in the last six years of her life.

A memorial service celebrating Amity’s life will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel. Burial will take place in the Peirce Family Cemetery, Lexington, Mass.
