Carole Phillips Hines, 89, retired from ODU after 25 years of teaching

Dr. Carole Phillips Hines, 89, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 7, 2017. Carole was born in Wayne, Mich., to Julian and Daisey Phillips. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Paul ‘Pete’ Hines Jr.

Carole earned a B.A. degree from Atlantic Christian College, an M.A. degree from East Carolina University and a Ph.D. from UNC Chapel Hill. In 1970, Carole and Pete moved to Norfolk so she could teach English and linguistics at Old Dominion University. She retired from Old Dominion in 1995 after 25 years of teaching. In 1997, she was on the adjunct faculty and retired again in 2011.

Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Lynne H. Miller of Vinita, Okla.; two sons Paul Hines III and Jonathan Philip Hines; four grandchildren, Christopher S. Pennington, Justin Paul Hines, Lindsey Nicole Hines and Dylan Matthew Hines; great-grandson, Stephen Watkins; and two daughters-in-law, Jane B. Hines and Cynthia Burnette Hines.

The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, March 15, at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, 1501 Colonial Ave. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Friends Service Committee, AFSC Development 1501 Cherry St., Philadelphia, PA 19102.
