Joseph ‘Ranny’ Ryan, 83, passed away Sunday, March 5, 2017. He leaves his longtime love of 38 years, his wife, Doris Eloise Ryan; son, Joseph R. Ryan Jr.; daughter, Susan R. Dugan; brother, Kevin Ryan; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and many close friends.

Ranny was born in Lowell, Mass., June 2, 1933, and resided in Virginia Beach. Ranny served 35 dedicated years for the U.S. Navy. He retired as a command master chief from the Naval Aviation Depot, where he started as an aircraft instrument mechanic and retired as a supervisory production controller.

Outside of his military career, Ranny was a Master Mason in the Willis V. Fentress Masonic Lodge. He was also a Noble in the Khedive Drum and Bugle Corps, where he played the glockenspiel for parades and special events. Ranny was an avid golfer who loved the game. He was a member of the Flyers Invitation Golf Association, Tidewater Angels Golf Association and the Khedive Golf Club.

A celebration of life ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 13, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel, 3600 Virginia Beach Blvd.
