VIRGINIA BEACH – Almost two years after a man was killed at the Oceanfront, a former sailor has been sentenced for his role in the incident.

Tevin Oliver was sentenced to four years in prison for involuntary manslaughter with one year of probation upon his release.

On April 25, 2015, Oliver shot and killed Stratton Mitchell near Atlantic Avenue and 26th Street. Officers were notified of the incident about 3 a.m. and found Mitchell with a single gunshot wound in a nearby hotel parking lot where he later died.

Police said that Mitchell approached Oliver and his friends, shoving one of the men to the ground. As Oliver helped his friend to his feet, Stratton moved toward the men. Oliver then pulled out a .40 caliber handgun and fired one shot, police said.

According to court documents, officers at the scene found a single shell at the scene.
