Peggy Gillroy Peek, 90, passed away Tuesday, March 7, 2017. Born to the late James and Winnie Rose, she was the original ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter,’ who grew up in the coal fields of West Virginia in abject poverty. Peggy was the epitome of Southern strength and reliance.

Ahead of her time, she transcended her education level to become a single female business owner. Peggy was a longtime Lynnhaven Colony resident and her beauty shop, Bay Beach Beauty Salon, was a focal point of the Great Neck area. For over two decades, she provided food, friendship and stylish hair. The beauty shop was known for its raucous Super Bowl parties.

Peggy enjoyed taking trips with her husband, John, all throughout the world, but was most at home in her own kitchen. Her family and pets were the bedrock of her existence. Peggy was a loving and nurturing person and a devoted caregiver to her son, Paul, who passed away from Cystic Fibrosis.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Paul Gillroy Sr. and John Peek; and son, Paul Gillroy Jr.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Patrick Gillroy, and his wife, Carolyn; and grandchildren, Shelby, John and Erin Gillroy, Denise Saunders, and her husband, Thomas, and Alex and Audrey Lusby.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 10, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel. A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 11, at Church of the Holy Family.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Peggy’s honor may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
