VIRGINIA BEACH — A U.S. Navy sailor died after being shot Friday night at NAS Oceana by a base security officer, according to spokesperson Jennifer Colaizzi.
A security officer encountered the sailor on base and shot him because he feared for his and others’ safety, according to Colaizzi. The sailor was then taken to the hospital, where he died.
Colaizzi said security responded to a request for assistance from someone on base at 10:15 p.m.
Virginia Beach police officers responded to a call about a hit and run incident nearby at 9:50 p.m., which led them to NAS Oceana after noticing damage to base gate two, according to a VBPD release.
Colaizzi said the sailor was the same suspect Virginia Beach police officers looked for, according to the information the base has currently. Police didn’t report injuries from the hit and run incident, according to the release.
This case is still under investigation and the sailor won’t be identified until next of kin are notified.
