VIRGINIA BEACH — A dead whale was found washed ashore in Virginia Beach on Sunday — the third whale found dead in the area in less than two weeks.

Virginia Aquarium spokesperson Matt Klepeisz said someone reported it to the organization’s stranding response team early Sunday morning.

Klepeisz said it washed up around 80th Street and was moved away from the tidal line.

The Virginia Aquarium stranding response team marked a perimeter around it with blue tape.

The whale appeared to have several lacerations on its right side and a stench emanated from the area of its mouth. The cause of its death is still undetermined.

Klepiesz said the team will examine conditions and perform a necropsy on the creature Monday morning to determine if it came in contact with a propeller before or after it died.
