Dale John Gurney, 76, enjoyed an extensive Masonic mission

Dale John Gurney, 76, of Virginia Beach, passed away, Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2017, after a short illness.

Dale was born June 12, 1940, in Binghamton, N.Y., to Stewart and Betty Gurney. He was a graduate of Whitney Point Central High School. He earned his B.A. from St. Leo College and a master’s degree from Golden Gate University. Dale joined the U.S. Navy in October 1958 and retired April 30, 1985, as a chief warrant officer 3. He worked for AMSEC until he retired in 2008. Dale began his Masonic career when he was raised in Transportation Lodge No. 337 in February 1982. He served as worshipful master in 1991 and was exalted in Warwick Royal Arch Chapter in 1984. He served as the high priest in 1992, 1996 and 1997. Dale was the district deputy grand high priest for the Third Capitular District for the 1993 to 1994 Capitular Year. He is also a past high priest of Uroy Harris Royal Arch Chapter & the Virginia Research Royal Arch Chapter, and was the grand high priest for the Royal Arch Masons in the Commonwealth of Virginia in 2009.

Dale is survived by his wife, Bonnie Gurney; daughter, Cynthia Tucker (Stephen Tucker) and Christina Covington (Christopher Covington); grandchildren, Ashley Tucker (Christopher Lemmons), Benjamin Covington and Laura Covington; two great-grandchildren, Grace Ann Lemmons and Emma Lynn Lemmons; brother, Stewart Gurney of Kentucky and Bernard Gurney of New York.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 9, at Saint John’s Baptist Church, 2300 Holland Road, Virginia Beach. Pastor Chuck Haley will be officiating. Military honors will take place after the ceremony. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Dale after the service in the Fellowship Hall.
