VIRGINIA BEACH – For the second time in five days, a dead whale has washed up on Virginia shores.

Matt Klepeisz, a spokesperson for the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, said the whale that washed ashore Tuesday afternoon was initially spotted floating in the Chesapeake Bay. The whale was found on the shores of Butler’s Bluff on the Eastern Shore around 1 p.m., Klepeisz said.

Klepeisz said that a stranding team is on its way to the location of the whale.

On Thursday, a juvenile humpback whale weighing nearly 10,000 pounds was found on the shore near the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel and taken to the Craney Island Dredge Material Management Facility in Portsmouth.

Results from the necropsy have not been finalized, but Kelpeisz said the wounds on the whale found Thursday are consistent with large propeller injuries.
