Katherine Curtin and Erik Cashwell are to be married Nov. 19, 2017, at Hermitage Museum in Norfolk, Va.
Katherine, 30, is employed as a restaurant manager. She graduated from Churchland High in 2005.
Erik, 31, is employed as a tugboat captain. He graduated from Churchland High School in 2004. He is a son of Catherine Cashwell.
Erik proposed to Katherine on her birthday, Dec. 17, 2016. “First, he presented me with a pebble that had two penguins carved on it. We love animals so I was so excited for the pebble,” said Katherine. The story associated with the story is that when male penguins choose their mate, they search the beach for the perfect pebble to present to their love; and if she accepts, they are mates for life. So, of course Katherine immediately wanted to show off her pebble and Erik’s sweet gesture by posting it on Snapchat and sending a picture to her grandma.
Meanwhile, Erik was following her around their apartment and continued to suggest that she hang it on their Christmas tree. “He kept saying you should hang it on the tree, hang it on the tree,” said Katherine. So she did. When she turned turn around, Erik was on his knee and said, “now that you except my pebble, will you marry me?” It was so unexpected, Katherine had to ask if it was real life. Of course she said, “yes!” He is the love of her life and best friend. “He also had a certificate made to commemorate the day we affirmed our love and commitment to one another with the pebble…and the ring,” said Katherine.
