Virginia Natural Gas is warning customers against scammers who aim to intimidate and swindle people out of hard-earned cash.
The scam often starts with a call to an unsuspecting customer from a person pretending to be a Virginia Natural Gas representative. The scammer will threaten to disconnect the customer’s gas service unless they make a big payment in a short period of time, according to a Virginia Natural Gas news release.
Scammers know all of the tricks. They can copy a company’s voice response system so that customers calling back will believe they are reaching a legitimate company. They can also replicate a company’s customer service phone number to appear on caller ID.
Don’t get scammed. Hang up the phone if a person claiming to be a Virginia Natural Gas representative seems angry or upset, demands instant payment from a prepaid debit card or threatens to turn off your service.
Don’t be shy. If a Virginia Natural Gas field representative comes to your home, feel free to ask for identification. If a person calls and claims to work for Virginia Natural Gas, ask them to verify account information that only you and the company would know.
If you think you’ve been scammed, call your local police department and then contact Virginia Natural Gas customer care at 1-866-229-3578.
