A project aiming to mitigate congestion and improve safety on a Hampton Roads interchange will break ground at an event Thursday.

The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the 300 block of South Newtown Road before Pleasant Point Drive in Norfolk, and will feature Secretary of Transportation Aubrey Layne, Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms and Norfolk Mayor Kenneth Alexander.

The I-64/I-264 interchange improvement project is a two-phase process that will provide four miles of interstate alterations between the Twin Bridges and the Witchduck Road Interchange in Virginia Beach. Thursday’s event will mark the beginning of the first phase, according to a VDOT media advisory.
