damienmdukesmugA 29-year-old Virginia Beach man will spend 13 years in prison for murdering his mother with a dumbbell, officials say.

Damien Michael Dukes, of the 4200 block of Old Lyne Road, was sentenced Tuesday to 30 years in prison with 17 suspended by Virginia Beach Circuit Court Judge A. Bonwill Shockley.

On May 2, Shockley found Dukes guilty of second-degree murder during a one-day trial in which Dukes pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, according to a Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney’s news release.

Dukes killed his 54-year-old mother, Victory Star Winner, on April 9, 2014 after the pair got into a fight over living arrangements.

Dukes was living with Winner in a rented room at the Studios for Less hotel in Virginia Beach. Winner told her son she was moving out of the room and needed him to find a new place to live, the release states.

During the argument, Dukes took a dumbbell weight and hit Winner with it several times. Later, he covered her with a blanket.

He called 911 the next day and told the dispatcher that he’d killed his mother and where police could find her body.
