After some Virginia Beach students were on the receiving end of disrespectful comments following the election, a city middle school principal contacted parents asking them for help.

In a letter, Alex Bergren, the principal of Princess Anne Middle School, wrote that she was dismayed to learn of comments that were made by students that included “You are going to get sent back to your country now” and “We are going to build a wall in the school and put you on the other side of it.”

Bergren is asking parents to talk to their children about the importance of expressing positive values, encourage students to report inappropriate behavior and remind students that the school will discipline those who threaten the safety of others.

The school is also launching a “We are Panthers” campaign, Bergren said, to promote the “values and behaviors that make us proud to be Panthers.”

“I will address all students with a positive message that challenges them to rise above negative influences,” Bergren wrote.
