A new, additional two-lane tunnel that will run under the Thimble Shoal Channel and west of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is coming to Hampton Roads.
The Parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel will cost $756 million.
Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced Tuesday that the project will be financed by The Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel Commission, primarily with federal and state bonds. Construction will begin next October, according to a new release.
“This new tunnel will expand capacity and improve safety for travelers who use the CBBT, as well as protect the economic competitiveness and quality of life of the Hampton Roads region,” said Gov. McAuliffe in a news release. “The CBBT is the only direct link between Hampton Roads and Virginia’s Eastern Shore, making this facility a vital and convenient connection, supporting commerce in the region.”
