Mary Elizabeth Johnson, 87, of the 2000 block of S. Independence Blvd., Virginia Beach, passed into the hands of the Lord Nov. 7, 2016.
Mrs. Johnson enjoyed singing in her church choir, square and line dancing and traveling to new places with her friends and family. She was the matriarch of one of the founding families of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Virginia Beach and recently returned after attending Holy Family Catholic Church in Elizabeth City, N.C.
Mrs. Johnson was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, “Johnny” Johnson, and is survived by their four sons, Thom Johnson, and his wife, Ronda, of Albany, Ore., Jerry Johnson, and his wife, Beatrice, of Virginia Beach, Ken Johnson, and his wife, Patricia, of Virginia Beach, Michael Johnson, and his wife, Lisa, of Portland, Ore., and their two daughters, Kathleen Johnson Skogstad, and her husband, Britt, of Chesapeake, Va. and Laura Johnson Levine, and her husband, Robert, of Chesapeake, Va.; as well as their 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, David Sweeney, and his wife, Evelyn, of Homosassa, Fla, and Robert Sweeney, and his wife, Jean, of Hatfield, Pa.
The family will receive friends at Holy Spirit Catholic Church on Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2016, from 5-6 p.m. and a Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated at 6:15 p.m. by Father Merlito Abiog. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to St. Joseph’s Indian School, P.O. Box 326, Chamberlain, SD 57326
