FEMA encourages insured Southside residents to register for disaster assistance

Officials are encouraging Virginia Beach and Norfolk residents to register for disaster assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) even if they have homeowner’s insurance.

FEMA advises those who are insured and sustained damage to their home and property during Hurricane Matthew to contact their insurance companies and file a claim before registering with FEMA.

Homeowners must keep record of insurance claim information because FEMA will request documentation. FEMA won’t duplicate insurance benefits, although residents could be eligible for help with losses not covered or more expensive than insurance coverage, according to a Virginia Department of Emergency Management news release.

Uninsured or underinsured people could also be eligible for FEMA’s Other Needs Assistance grants for medical, dental, child care and funeral costs.

Apply for FEMA disaster assistance by Jan. 3, 2017.
