Opioid and heroin overdoses have an unprecedented death grip on Hampton Roads.

Starting today, Virginia Beach and Norfolk residents can pick up drug disposal kits at several health institutions in the south side. They are free and people are encouraged to call before they pick one up.

Attorney General Mark R. Herring announced 80,000 Deterra drug-deactivation kits would be available last month. They could potentially dispose of 3.6 million leftover prescription pills, according to a news release.

“Disposing of unused and unneeded prescriptions is an important part of fighting the opioid crisis that so often starts in the medicine cabinet with abuse or misuse of otherwise legally prescribed painkillers,” Herring said in a news release. “These kits are going to make it easy for Virginians to safely and quickly dispose of excess prescriptions before they can be abused, misused, or accidentally ingested.”
