Flood prevention is everyone’s responsibility, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.
As autumn leaves fall, drains and ditches may become clogged with debris, which can cause flooding and road deterioration. Residents can prevent those problems by keeping drains and ditches on their property clean of leaves and grass clippings, according to a VDOT news release.
Maintaining good drainage also includes keeping pet waste out of open channels, ditches and driveway pipes.
As residents work to keep their personal property clean, VDOT is also working to keep state-owned ditches and drains clean of debris to maintain safe roadways.
