Downtown dogs lost their leashes Friday at the opening of a new dog park in Norfolk.

The park, located at 400 Granby St., is a piece of paradise for pups looking to stretch their legs in the middle of the hustling city.

They did just that on Friday at the park’s “leash cutting.” With tails and tongues wagging, the canines chased each other down the dog run and showed off their Halloween costumes during a contest sponsored by Muddy Paws.

The park, which took two years to come to fruition, was built by Norfolk, in partnership with the Downtown Norfolk Council and Marathon Development Group. Marathon donated $40,000 to the park’s development, according to a city news release.
