Finalists vie for Virginia Beach ‘Youth Ambassador’ title Saturday is your source for free local news and information in Virginia Beach

One of five high school students will be chosen Saturday to represent the Sister Cities Association of Virginia Beach as its first Youth Ambassador.

The finalists – Cameron Grove of Green Run High School, Michaela Vecerkauskas of Tallwood High School, and Komel Kamdar, Jennifer Liao and Minday Medrana, all of Princess Anne High School – will undergo final judging at the Youth Ambassador Gala at Princess Anne Country Club, 3800 Pacific Ave.

The competition, which was open to all Virginia Beach students in grades 9-11 with at least a 3.0 GPA, focuses on areas important to the Sister Cities Association of Virginia Beach and its sister city relationships around the globe.

It will conclude Saturday, Oct. 15 with each finalist responding to interview questions, talking about a global issue of concern and his or her plan to address it as Youth Ambassador, and performing a talent, which could be singing, dancing or playing a musical instrument.

“Each of the candidates is impressive,” said Carolyn Garrett, event chairperson. “They have wonderful ideas and have demonstrated a deep commitment to the ideals of the Sister Cities organization, which is to foster international understanding, friendship and cooperation by promoting people-to-people exchanges and continuing relationships between our city and citizens.”

The winning student will receive a $2,000 scholarship to the college of his or her choice. The first runner-up will receive a $1,000 scholarship and the second runner-up will receive a $500 scholarship.

The winner will be recognized at a formal meeting of the Virginia Beach City Council and will participate in various events throughout the coming year, including the Neptune Festival, the Virginia Beach Christmas Parade, the Cherry Blossom Festival, FilFest and the International Sister Cities 2017 Conference, to be held in Virginia Beach next July.
