If “support our troops” is more than just a slogan to you, join in an upcoming event in which Norfolk-area residents will help prepare holiday care packages to be delivered to U.S. soldiers deployed abroad.
On Nov. 18 the group Troopster and the City of Norfolk are hosting a care package event at the Slover Library, 235 E. Plume St. From noon to 6 p.m. that day, people will gather at the library – some to donate non-perishable items, some to package the items for delivery to soldiers overseas, and maybe some to do both.
The goal is to prepare and send 500 care packages – including snacks, letters and other goodies – to troops who don’t have families and are deployed for the holidays.
Organizers have been preparing for six months, hosting snack drives in which more than 30 local businesses have donated more than 2,000 non-perishable snack items, toiletries and gifts. Soldiers on ships such as the USS Carter Hall, the USS Whidby Island and the USS Eisenhower will be among the recipients of the holiday packages.
