CHESAPEAKE – Jessie “Robert” Gay, Sr., 88, of Chesapeake, Va., passed away Oct. 11, 2016. He was born in Suffolk, Va., and was the son of the late Jessie J. Gay and Annie Archer Gay.

Robert retired from Higgerson-Buchanan as an operator/supervisor after 26 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, a member of American Legion Post 210, and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 22. He enjoyed camping at Hampton Lodge Campground for 33 years in Coinjock, N.C.

Robert is survived by his wife, JoAnn O. Gay; son, Jessie R. Gay, Jr., of Chesapeake, Va.; grandson, J. Robert Gay, III, of Arlington, Va.; granddaughter, Danielle N. Smith and husband Eric, of Norfolk, Va.; sister, Marie Winslow, of Hertford, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 14, 2016, at Snellings Funeral Home, George Washington Hwy. Chapel, with Marlin “Mo” Patrick officiating. Burial will be in Albert G. Horton, Jr., Memorial Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
