Eddie Pernell Antoine II, a retired U.S. Navy commander, passed away on Friday, Sept. 30, 2016 at the age of 70. Born in Biloxi, Miss., he was the son of the late Eddie Pernell Antoine Sr. and Dorothy Alfretta Lavigne Antoine.
He was a graduate of Jackson State University, Jackson, Miss., Officer Candidate School, Newport, R.I., the Defense Language Institute, Monterey, Calif., and he earned a master’s of public administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass. He proudly served his country, rising to the rank of Navy commander. He was an intelligence officer whose duty assignments included anti-submarine warfare, and served on the following ships: The Navarro, The Harlan County and The Mount Whitney.
Commander Antoine’s public service includes: director of personnel, Norfolk Public Schools; assistant superintendent for human resources, Virginia Beach City Public Schools and Newport News City Schools. He was vice president of human resources for American Medical Response; and executive director for the Virginia Association of School Personnel Administrators. His last public service assignment was senior human resources generalist for the City of Virginia Beach Department of Social Services.
Cherishing his memory are his loving wife of 47 years, Mary Diane Dillon Antoine; daughter, Aerica Yvette Antoine Williams; sons, Eddie Pernell Antoine III, and Christopher Dillon Antoine; sisters, Donna Antoine Lavigne, Kim Antoine-Ray, and Cheryl Faye Jones; brothers, Gregory Alfred Antoine, Bruce Maurice Antoine and Kevin Lavigne Antoine; and grandchildren, Taylor Elise Goodwin, Sydney Desiree Williams, Julian Chandler Williams and Vincent James Patrick; and a host of extended family members, friends, and associates.
Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, 1485 Kempsville Rd., Virginia Beach, is in charge of arrangements. Visitation is on Friday, Oct. 7, 2016, from 7-9 p.m. A celebration of Commander Antoine’s life will be held Saturday, Oct. 8, 2016, at 1 p.m., at Mt. Zion AME Church, 2268 Princess Anne Rd., Virginia Beach. Interment is pending at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.
